Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Free Pass – Purchase, Pickup & Usage Guide
The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Free Pass (Japanese name: 立山黒部アルペンフリーきっぷ) is a JR Pass offered by JR Central specifically for domestic travelers visiting the Tateyama Kurobe area. It provides unlimited rides on all eight transportation modes along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, as well as unlimited travel on JR trains between Nagoya and Toyama and between Nagoya and Shinano-Omachi.
This pass is identical in design and price to the Alpine-Takayama-Matsumoto Area Tourist Pass offered to international visitors, and can be considered its domestic Japanese version.

Because the “Alpine-Takayama-Matsumoto Area Tourist Pass” is limited to foreign nationals on short-term stays in Japan, Japanese citizens and foreign residents of Japan are not eligible to purchase it. Therefore, if you are Japanese or a foreign resident living in Japan, you can purchase the “Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Free Pass” instead.
Additionally, the “Alpine-Takayama-Matsumoto Area Tourist Pass” is only valid until early November, whereas the “Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Free Pass” remains valid until the end of November when the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route closes for the season. This means international travelers visiting Tateyama Kurobe in November can also use this pass.
Before 2026, the “Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Free Pass” was known as the “Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Ticket” (立山黒部アルペンきっぷ), which had a broader coverage area (including Osaka, Kyoto, or Shizuoka) and was valid for up to eight days. However, in 2026 the pass underwent a major revision and was renamed the “Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Free Pass,” with a reduced coverage area and shorter validity period.

4. Using the Pass for JR, Toyama Chitetsu, and Buses
During the five-day validity period, the “Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Free Pass” provides unlimited rides on JR trains between Nagoya and Toyama, JR trains between Nagoya and Shinano-Omachi, Toyama Chihō Tetsudō trains between Toyama City and Tateyama Station, and route buses between Ogizawa Station and Shinano-Omachi. Simply show your valid pass when boarding.
When using JR trains, enter and exit through the staffed gate (係員改札口) and show your pass to the attendant. For Toyama Chihō Tetsudō trains, show your pass to station staff. For the Ogizawa–Shinano-Omachi bus, show the pass to the driver when boarding.

5. How to Reserve Limited Express Seats with the Pass
In addition to unlimited non-reserved rides, the “Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Free Pass” includes four reserved-seat bookings for limited express trains.
Among the covered transport, the six Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route conveyances (Tateyama–Ogizawa), the Ogizawa–Shinano-Omachi route bus, and the JR Oito Line (Shinano-Omachi–Matsumoto) have no reserved seats. Toyama Chihō Tetsudō trains also allow only non-reserved seating. Therefore, reserved seats are only needed for JR trains between Nagoya and Toyama and between Nagoya and Matsumoto.
For a five-day itinerary, four reserved seats are generally sufficient. For example, a simple Nagoya–Toyama–Alpine Route–Matsumoto–Nagoya trip requires only two reserved seats (Nagoya→Toyama, Matsumoto→Nagoya). If you also stop in Gero Onsen and Takayama, you’ll use exactly four reserved seats (Nagoya→Gero Onsen, Gero Onsen→Takayama, Takayama→Toyama, Matsumoto→Nagoya).
The reserved-seat ticket is a separate slip indicating train number, departure/arrival stations, date, times, car, and seat number. You don’t need it to enter the gate—just show your JR Pass—but you must show the reserved-seat ticket if an attendant checks onboard.
5.1 Reserving at a Staffed Ticket Window
You can reserve seats at any JR station ticket counter. Simply present your JR Pass instead of paying. If you’ve already planned your train times, you can make reservations right after picking up your pass.

If you need to check train schedules and fares, you can use this JR Central website, or the Navitime website or app.
Note: The direct limited express train from Nagoya to Toyama (including Takayama and Gero Onsen) is the “Hida” (ひだ) train, while the direct limited express train from Nagoya to Matsumoto is the “Shinano” (しなの) train. If you take local trains, you will need to transfer at Gifu and Shiojiri, but most travelers take the limited express.
Important: From April 24 to May 6, 2026, the “Hida” and “Shinano” limited express trains will have reserved seating only. If you travel during this period, be sure to pick up your reserved seat tickets before boarding.
Reserved seat tickets can be refunded before the train’s departure time. If your plans change and you need to take a different limited express train, you can take your reserved seat tickets and JR Pass to any JR station ticket counter to request a refund.
2. Using the Ticket Vending Machine to Reserve Seats
In addition to booking at a staffed ticket counter, reserved seat tickets can also be reserved and issued using the ticket vending machines at the station.

Here’s how to use them:
(1) On the main screen, select your language (e.g., Traditional Chinese), then choose “Reserved Seat Ticket”.

(2) Select “Reserve a reserved seat using a coupon ticket.” (Note: The screen display may vary by machine; for example, some may have this option directly on the main screen.)

(3) Insert your rail pass into the ticket slot (usually indicated by a green light above the slot). If you are booking seats for multiple people, you can insert up to four passes one after another. After inserting all passes, tap “Finish Inserting”. The machine will then display how many more reserved seat tickets you can book with your pass. Tap “Confirm” to proceed.

(4) Enter your departure station, arrival station, travel date, and time, then tap “Search”. (Tip: When entering station names, you can type the first one or two letters of the station’s English name—for example, typing “na” will display Nagoya, and you can select it from the list.)

(5) From the list of trains that match your search, select the train you want, then choose the car and seat.

(6) Review your ticket details. If everything is correct, tap “Confirm”, then retrieve your rail pass and reserved seat tickets from the slot.

Note: If you need to change or cancel your reserved seat tickets after they have been issued, you must do so at a staffed ticket counter.
VI. How to Use the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Free Pass on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route
Although the “Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Free Pass” allows unlimited rides on the six modes of transport along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route during its validity period, you cannot board using the pass directly. You must first exchange it for a Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route boarding ticket.

Where you exchange your pass for the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route boarding ticket depends on which side you start from. If you start from Tateyama Station on the Toyama side, you can exchange it at Tateyama Station. If you start from Ogizawa Station on the Nagano side, you can exchange it at Ogizawa Station.
The boarding ticket can only be exchanged on the day you go up the mountain. If you start from Tateyama Station, you will need to specify your departure time for the Tateyama Cable Car from Tateyama Station. If you start from Ogizawa Station, you will need to specify your departure time for the Kanden Tunnel Trolley Bus from Ogizawa Station to Kurobe Dam.
Aside from the Tateyama Cable Car and Kanden Tunnel Trolley Bus, which require a designated departure time, all other transport along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route do not require a specific reservation. Simply show your boarding ticket at the waiting area to line up. Since the “Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Free Pass” allows unlimited rides on the six modes of transport along the Alpine Route, you can use the boarding ticket to ride as many times as you like between Tateyama Station and Ogizawa Station.
Note: With the “Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Free Pass,” you can only exchange it for the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route boarding ticket and select your departure time at the two locations mentioned above. It is not possible to make a reservation through the official online ticketing system.
