【Sapporo Accommodation • Recommendation】Hotel Gracery Sapporo: A Conveniently Located Boutique Hotel Opposite Sapporo Station
Besides the Century Royal Hotel Sapporo and the Mitsui Garden Hotel Sapporo I stayed at during Christmas 2014, the Hotel Gracery Sapporo, located directly opposite the South Exit of Sapporo Station, is another hotel near Sapporo Station with superb transportation access and good quality, making it a recommended choice when selecting accommodation in Sapporo. That’s why I chose this hotel for my first night in Sapporo during my trip to Hokkaido to see the autumn leaves this year.

Hotel Gracery Sapporo was formerly known as the Sapporo Washington Hotel and is one of the hotels under the Japanese Washington Hotel Group (WHG).

1. Location and Transportation of Hotel Gracery Sapporo
Hotel Gracery Sapporo is situated directly opposite the South Exit of Sapporo Station, just across a crosswalk from the exit.
The exterior design of Hotel Gracery Sapporo is very unique and easy to recognize.

Opposite Hotel Gracery Sapporo is the South Exit plaza of Sapporo Station.

Main entrance of Hotel Gracery Sapporo

The hotel lobby is located on the 7th floor of the building, so after entering through the main door, you need to take the elevator to the 7th floor.

In addition to accessing the hotel from the ground entrance, the B1 level of the hotel building connects to the Sapporo Station underground shopping mall. You can walk directly from the underground mall to the hotel elevators via an indoor passageway without going outside, so it’s fine even if it’s raining or snowing. However, there is a section with about a dozen steps on the underground connecting path, which can be slightly inconvenient if you have heavy luggage. Below is the route to walk from Sapporo Station to Hotel Gracery Sapporo via the indoor connecting passage.
Exit through the West Ticket Gate of Sapporo Station.

After exiting, walk a few steps towards the South Exit, then take this escalator down to the next level.

Walk a few steps forward and you will see the APIA pedestrian street, turn into APIA.

When you reach this crossroads on the APIA pedestrian street, proceed in the direction shown ahead in the picture below. (Note: Turning right leads to the Century Royal Hotel Sapporo and the Mitsui Garden Hotel Sapporo.)

When you get here, take the stairs on the left. There are about a dozen steps here, which can be a bit strenuous if your luggage is heavy.

After passing through this door, you will be on the B1 level of the building where Hotel Gracery Sapporo is located. The elevators here can take you directly to the guest floors (requires room key card) or to the 7th-floor hotel lobby.

Hotel Parking
The building housing Hotel Gracery Sapporo has a parking lot, with the entrance/exit located on the west side of the building, right next to the hotel’s main ground entrance. Parking costs 1,000 yen per night. Since this was my first night in Sapporo and I picked up the car the next day, I did not use their parking lot.

The most convenient pick-up location for a rental car when staying at Hotel Gracery Sapporo is the Times Car Rental Sapporo Ekimae store. From the main entrance of Hotel Gracery Sapporo, walk west about 150 meters, cross two crosswalks, and you’re there. We also picked up our car from this branch this time. (Update: This branch is now closed.)

2. Environment and Facilities of Hotel Gracery Sapporo
The lobby of Hotel Gracery Sapporo is located on the seventh floor. It’s not very large, but the design and decor are quite nice.

Check-in and Check-out counters

Check-out can also be done using this self-service machine.

Other rest facilities in the lobby

There is also a lounge next to the lobby, equipped not only with tables and chairs but also with office equipment like computers, printers, and photocopiers.

The hotel lobby also has a small shop where you can buy daily necessities, snacks, and souvenirs.

III. The Rooms at Hotel Gracery Sapporo
The guest floors at Hotel Gracery Sapporo feature a U-shaped design, with over 40 rooms on each floor.

The corridor and room door

We booked the cheapest and smallest room type, the Semi-Double Room, which is only 15 square meters. However, Hotel Gracery Sapporo also offers Twin Rooms of 19 and 22 square meters, though they are more expensive.
The 15-square-meter Semi-Double Room is indeed very compact; luggage can only be opened in the entrance area.

Naturally, the bed size isn’t large either, with a width of only 140cm.

Even the TV had to be mounted on a stand at the foot of the bed.

The moving space beside the bed is also very limited.

To accommodate the limited room area, the desk is also designed to be narrow, but fortunately, there’s a pull-out panel for extra space.

The top of the cabinet next to the desk is an ideal place to store miscellaneous items.

Although the room is small, there is still space for a small refrigerator.

With such a small room, you certainly can’t expect a large space for hanging clothes.

The bathroom follows the standard design of a business hotel.

Essential hotel room amenities, such as an electric kettle and a humidifier, are of course provided.

There are bedside lamps, and also a universal charging cable suitable for any phone.

There’s also a set of hotel pajamas, which I find takes up the most space because they are usually unused, and you have to find a place to store them.

Finally, free WiFi is an essential amenity, but the password must be found on the TV screen (see image below).

The WiFi speed in the Hotel Gracery Sapporo room was acceptable, with a download speed of around 15Mbps. Since we didn’t rent a portable WiFi device for this trip but purchased a Japanese data SIM card with limited data, switching to the hotel’s free WiFi was essential.

IV. Hotel Gracery Sapporo Stay Summary
Apart from the small room size, Hotel Gracery Sapporo doesn’t have many other significant drawbacks. Of course, if you’re willing to spend more on a larger Twin Room, the space should be sufficient. The biggest advantage of Hotel Gracery Sapporo is its location, making it most suitable for travelers taking the JR, especially during heavy winter snow, as you don’t need to drag luggage on the surface roads. Although there are about ten steps on the way from the underground street to the hotel elevator, it’s not a major issue and is still better than pulling luggage through snow. Additionally, although this hotel isn’t new, it has been renovated, so the lobby and guest rooms are still very clean and feature a modern, stylish design.
