【Sapporo Accommodation Recommendation】Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori: Located on Tanukikoji Shopping Street, Super Convenient for Shopping and Exploring
Sapporo in Hokkaido is akin to Osaka in Kansai, and Sapporo’s Tanukikoji is comparable to Osaka’s Shinsaibashi. For those who enjoy bustle and love shopping, a hotel located on Tanukikoji is undoubtedly the best accommodation choice in Sapporo. The Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori I stayed at during my self-driving tour in Hokkaoo last summer is situated right in the center of Tanukikoji. The hotel’s quality is also quite good, making it one of the most recommended hotels when choosing accommodation in Sapporo.

1. Location and Transportation of Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori
The Tanukikoji Shopping Street in Sapporo is divided into seven blocks, and the Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori is located on Block 4 of Tanukikoji, right in the middle of the shopping street, which is the busiest part. If Tanukikoji’s status in Sapporo is equivalent to Shinsaibashi in Osaka, then the Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori is like the Cross Hotel Osaka in Shinsaibashi, equally convenient and comfortable, making it an excellent choice for accommodation in Sapporo.
Tanukikoji Shopping Street

The main entrance of Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori faces another main street parallel to Tanukikoji. However, since there is also a side door on the Tanukikoji Shopping Street side, the main entrance is used less frequently. As I didn’t take photos of the main entrance during this stay, I’ve borrowed two Google Street View images for your reference.

The side exit of Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori leads directly to Tanukikoji Shopping Street. Whether going shopping or to the subway station, you need to go via Tanukikoji. Therefore, except for loading and unloading luggage when arriving by car, guests mostly use the side door for entry and exit.

Tanukikoji Shopping Street is not near Sapporo Station, so getting to Sapporo Station from Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori requires taking transportation, though it’s only two subway stops away. The hotel is located roughly between Susukino Subway Station and Odori Subway Station, closer to Susukino Station, about 200 meters away, a 2-3 minute walk, so transportation is quite convenient. (Note: The hotel officially states the nearest subway station is Odori Station.)
Getting to the subway station from Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori is very convenient. Exiting the hotel side door onto Tanukikoji Shopping Street, you’ll see this escalator. Going down here leads to the Pole Town underground walkway below Sapporo Ekimae-dori. Following the walkway for 200 meters takes you to Susukino Subway Station, so you don’t have to worry even if you’re pulling luggage or it’s raining or snowing.

Besides leading directly to Susukino Station, the underground walkway also connects to Odori Station on the other end, linking to the department stores near the various parks of Odori Park, and you can even take elevators directly up to the Sapporo TV Tower without going to the surface. Furthermore, from Odori Station, walking along the underground street towards Sapporo Station leads to Sapporo Station.

Susukino is one of Sapporo’s main entertainment and tourist districts, located about 200 meters walk from Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori.

Nijo Market, one of Sapporo’s main tourist spots, is right opposite the exit of Tanukikoji Block 1. It’s about a 500-meter walk along Tanukikoji Shopping Street from Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori.

Hotel Parking
Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori does not have its own parking lot. If you are on a self-driving tour and will need the car after checking in, you must park at one of the hotel’s affiliated parking lots (called “提携駐車場” in Japanese). When we stayed in 2015, Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori had two affiliated parking lots. The one closest to the hotel was this open-air parking lot diagonally opposite the main entrance.

2022 Update: The land where this open-air parking lot was located has now been developed into a building and is no longer a parking lot.
Currently, Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori has three affiliated parking lots: 『4-chome Endo Parking』, 『3・5 Tanuki Parking』, and 『2.7 Endo Parking』 indoor parking lots.
『4-chome Endo Parking』 is the parking lot closest to the hotel, located about 50 meters walk towards the intersection from across the street from the hotel. 『3・5 Tanuki Parking』 is about 200 meters from Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori, a bit further. It’s about a 3-minute walk from the hotel’s side door via Tanukikoji. Driving from the hotel’s main entrance takes about 3-4 minutes.
Below is the location and information for the 『4-chome Endo Parking』 and 『3・5 Tanuki Parking』 lots. (Note: This image contains older information; the parking lot labeled number 1, 『PIVOT(ピヴォ)パーキング』, is no longer a parking lot.)

The three affiliated parking lots for Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori charge the same rate, 1,200 yen per night, but the parking durations and overtime charges differ. Among them, 『4-chome Endo Parking』 does not allow continuous parking for more than one day or中途出車 (mid-exit? – likely means exiting and re-entering the same day), while the other two lots do.
When using an affiliated parking lot, you can enter by taking a ticket at the entrance as usual, then give the parking ticket to the hotel staff to process. If the parking duration exceeds the cooperative time period (提携時間) agreed between the hotel and the parking lot, the overtime portion must be paid separately at the exit payment machine upon leaving, according to the parking lot’s standard rates.
Although 『3・5 Tanuki Parking』 is a bit farther from Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori, it has the fewest restrictions. If the other two lots are unsuitable, you can only park at 『3・5 Tanuki Parking』. Its phone number is 011-218-1774, which can be used for navigation.
The following photos show the entrance to the 『3・5 Tanuki Parking』 lot (from Google Street View)

The map below shows the location of 『3・5 Tanuki Parking』 and the driving route from the main entrance of Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori to the parking lot.

2. Environment and Facilities of Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori
Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori is a business hotel, so the lobby design is relatively simple but also quite stylish. Additionally, the front desk offers a parcel mailing service for guests.

3. Rooms at Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori
This time we booked two different types of rooms: one Deluxe Double Room (デラックスダブル) and one Twin Room (ツイン). The room design, though simple, was very clean and comfortable.
Room Door and Entrance

The Deluxe Double Room is 18.2 square meters, which is considered relatively large for Japan. However, because the room shape is somewhat narrow and long, it doesn’t feel very spacious.

The wardrobe is open-style, without doors, and not very large.

The Twin Room is larger, at 26 square meters. Even with two beds, the room feels quite spacious and can also accommodate a sofa and coffee table.

Since the wardrobe is not very spacious, there are practical wall hooks installed for hanging clothes.

A mini fridge and an electric kettle are, of course, standard amenities.

A humidifier, a common fixture in Japanese hotels.

A standard bathroom and toilet setup.

Finally, complimentary WiFi is of course available, but the internet speed was not ideal. Fortunately, renting a portable WiFi router is a must when traveling nowadays, so I didn’t use the hotel’s slow WiFi.

IV. Summary of Staying at Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori
Over the past few years, I’ve stayed at five different hotels in Sapporo, four of which were near Sapporo Station. On previous trips, convenient transportation to New Chitose Airport was my top priority when choosing a Sapporo hotel. This time, because the entire trip was self-driven and I didn’t need to take the JR from Sapporo Station to the airport, I had more flexibility in choosing my Sapporo accommodation. This led me to choose the Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori, which is most convenient for shopping and exploring.
After staying in the Tanukikoji area, I found that transferring via subway from Tanukikoji to Sapporo Station to catch the train isn’t actually troublesome. Moreover, as mentioned earlier, getting to the subway station from Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori isn’t far, and the entire route has escalators and underground passages, so it’s not strenuous and you’re protected from rain and snow. The convenience of transportation is no worse than hotels near Sapporo Station. Additionally, the hotel isn’t far from the airport bus stop, making travel to and from New Chitose Airport even more convenient. (Note: For the airport bus pick-up and drop-off locations near Tanukikoji, you can refer to the relevant section in the La’gent Stay Sapporo Odori accommodation guide.)
Therefore, if I had to choose just one hotel in Sapporo as my top Sapporo accommodation recommendation, I would choose Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori. Although Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori is not a luxury hotel, its convenient location is my primary consideration when choosing a hotel, though room quality is also an important factor. If your criteria for selecting a hotel are similar to mine, you will probably like this hotel too.

Other Sapporo Accommodation Recommendations
In addition to the Richmond Hotel Sapporo Odori featured in this article, I have also stayed at Cross Hotel Sapporo, Mitsui Garden Hotel Sapporo, Century Royal Hotel Sapporo, Hotel Gracery Sapporo, and La’gent Stay Sapporo Odori during my trips to Hokkaido over the years. The quality and location of these hotels are excellent, and they are all on my list of Sapporo accommodation recommendations.
